Ideal, hmm. I don't know if there's one ideal. Every client is
different and therefore requires a different interface. But here are a
few thoughts, based on our favorite, most productive relationships.
The "Here's what we want to achieve, here's some money, we trust you
guys" relationship. We have a relationship like this with several
clients. Most recently, a B-to-B product/service provider who basically
uses us as their marketing department so that they can concentrate on
closing contracts.
The "We have no idea what we should do next. Got any thoughts?"
relationship. We've served in this consultative/mentoring/partnering
relationship with many clients — especially start-ups. By opening their
doors to us and opening our doors to them, we've helped several
successfully launch or go in a new direction.
The "Love the work. Want to come over for this picnic I'm throwing?" We
have evolved many client relationships into friendships after hours.
Mostly because we choose to work with people we like/admire and try to
be the kind of folks clients like/admire.
